The Top 4 Monticello AVA / Charlottesville Wineries (released a day at a time)

Virginia – the birthplace of American wine!

There are just over 35 wineries throughout the Monticello AVA (near Charlottesville), and I can report that I’ve tasted at each and every one of them. Most are nestled within the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and provide inspiring views; I’ve visited quite a few on multiple occasions!

The wineries here range from local “mom and pop shops” to worldwide conglomerates, with everything in between. The President even owns a winery out here!

Locals and regional wine enthusiasts may tell you that Viognier and Cabernet Franc are both kings in this AVA, but I disagree. Most Viognier here is on par for the country (though if you know where to look, you may find some amazing sparkling Viognier), and I’d rate this region’s Cab Franc below par for North America (with one single exception – Michael Shaps 2014 CF was VERY well done). Outside of these two, common Italian varietals are plentiful.

I dare say though, I cannot name any other region that produces better Petit Verdot and Tannat in North America! Yep you heard it from me first: the Monticello AVA makes these varietals both wonderfully and deliciously!

Before we get started, I wish to give an honorable mention to two very unique wineries which deserve recognition.

The first is Glass House, though recognition is not given to their wines, but rather for the memorable character of their tasting room. Have you ever tasted wine in a tropical conservatory with exotic plants and a small stream running through in it? Neither had I until my stop at Glass House! My most recent visit was also during a late winter day, and I had the entire place to myself (a perfect way to finish any day)! It remains one of my top five favorite locations to drink wine at. Glass House is a must-visit for its tasting room alone. I highly recommend visiting first thing in the morning, or later when the crowds are low, so you can enjoy the sounds of nature and soak in the peaceful serenity.

The second is Gabriele Rausse, where there’s something special I can’t quite put my finger on. The tasting room is a neatly-designed house, with half the walls comprised totally of glass; I felt like I was tasting wine with close friends in their European kitchen. The wines were well made, and their selections offered a few exotic varietals like White Pinot Noir. I think Gabriele Rausse captured my attention because I felt at home during my brief visit, though it does get a bit busy, and my “at home” feeling was a bit interrupted by the crowds (so I recommend going first thing in the morning, or during the off-season).

Oh, and for a third shout out (yes, I know I said two honorable mentions, but this one is technically a distillery!), Silverback Distillery impressed me with the quality and flavors of their spirits. For readers that know me personally, they’ll remember I often make a gagging face tasting spirits… but that doesn’t mean I can’t discern high quality! I simply can’t control my facial expressions. Anyway, Silverback makes world-class spirits, and it’s another must-stop for alcohol-lovers visiting the area.
